Privacy Policy

1) Overview
NUS-Maps is a campus navigation app for the National University of Singapore. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. This policy applies to NUS-Maps on both iOS and Android. App stores (including Apple’s App Store and Google Play) may require a publicly accessible privacy policy for apps.
2) Information we collect
A. Location (Precise Location — optional)
If you allow Location Services / Location Permission, we access precise location to show your position on the map and provide navigation/routing. Precise location generally means latitude/longitude-level accuracy.
iOS: You may be able to toggle “Precise Location” and/or choose approximate location where available.
Android: Location permission may include options such as “Precise” or “Approximate,” depending on your Android version and device settings.
You can use NUS-Maps without granting location permission, but some features may be limited (e.g., no live “blue dot” position).
B. Diagnostics and device information (limited)
We do not use third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs (for example, Firebase Analytics or Crashlytics).
However, Apple and Google may provide aggregated and/or non-identifying diagnostics to developers through their developer platforms (for example, crash logs or performance summaries) to help improve app stability and fix bugs. We use any such diagnostics only for reliability and debugging purposes.
C. Notifications (optional)
If you enable reminders, NUS-Maps can schedule notifications (for example, a “time to leave” reminder). Your operating system will ask you for notification permission:
iOS: via iOS permission prompts and Settings
Android: via Android permission prompts and system settings (varies by Android version)
What we do not collect
No account creation, no names, no phone numbers, no emails inside the app
No payments
No user-generated content
No advertising ID collection, no cross-app tracking, and no targeted advertising
3) How we use information
We use the information described above to:
Provide navigation features (maps, routing, live position on campus when enabled)
Improve stability and performance (debug crashes, fix bugs)
Deliver notifications only when you enable them in-app
4) Third-party services (Google Maps SDK / Google Maps Platform)
NUS-Maps uses Google Maps SDK / Google Maps Platform to display maps and provide map functionality. The Google Maps Platform Terms note that Google may collect and receive data such as search terms, IP addresses, and latitude/longitude coordinates to provide and improve services, subject to Google’s Privacy Policy.

Google Maps Platform Terms: https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/terms
5) Data sharing
We do not sell your personal data.
We do not share personal data with third parties except as needed to operate core map features:
Google Maps Platform (see section 4) for displaying maps and enabling map functionality.
We do not use third-party analytics, advertising networks, or crash-reporting services.
6) Data retention
We do not maintain user accounts or a user database.
Any on-device cache (e.g., map tiles or recent routes) is generally stored locally and can typically be removed by deleting the app.
Android note: You may also be able to clear the app’s storage/cache via Android system settings.
Third-party services (e.g., Google) may retain data according to their own policies and terms.
7) Your choices
You can control your data through your device settings:
Location
Enable/disable location access at any time
Where supported, choose approximate vs precise location
Notifications
Enable/disable notifications at any time in system settings
If you deny permissions, the app should still work with reduced functionality (e.g., manual browsing without live location).
8) Security
We take reasonable steps to protect information in our control. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
9) Children’s privacy
NUS-Maps is not specifically directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
10) Singapore PDPA
If you are in Singapore, the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) generally governs how organizations collect, use, and disclose personal data.
If you have questions or requests about personal data relating to NUS-Maps, contact us at the email below.
